Gallery Cafe gig photos

Thanks to everyone who came down to my show at the Gallery Cafe last Tuesday. It was a wonderful night, there was a great atmosphere in the cafe and all the bands were stunning. More shows coming after the summer, but first of all, here’s a few photos from the night.

Laura Boyle

I have been raving about Laura Boyle for a while now so I was delighted to have her play. I think she is something very special; gorgeous voice and wonderful songwriting. She was great on the night, playing a mixture of the songs present on her Soundcloud site and was joined by her two friends for ‘End of December’ and ‘Way of the Sun’, which worked brilliantly. I can’t wait to see what becomes of her, I hope its great.

Whiskey Moon Face

Fronted by the ‘whiskey’ voice of Louise Jones, Whiskey Moon Face make gypsy inspired folk music which finds itself incredibly difficult to compare to other acts or genres around at the moment, but is unique and wonderful. A truly special band to catch live, wonderful musicianship and rare energy. It was a pleasure to have them play, I’m sure they’ll be back for future Mountain Bea gigs!

Stokes William

One of my favourite new bands of the moment, and one of the best live, Stokes William treated the gallery cafe to a very special acoustic set with a couple of new songs thrown into the mix of old favourites like ‘Zion’ and ‘Waves’. Will also played a solo song about a moth, watch out for the video footage of that, it’s rather lovely. They have recently recored an EP, to be released at the end of the summer, I’m sure there will be lots more info about that coming nearer the time.

There is lots of video footage of the night coming, I’ll post the best of that when i’ve edited all!

Gig Review: Lazy Sunday with Stokes William, Roo Panes and Georgia Bruce @ Roundhouse

Ok, so this is an extremely biased review as I programmed and helped organise the evening but it was too good not to write about! I would first like to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who came along, it was a splendid evening and we sold out which I was so pleased about!

The three bands we had playing were Georgia Bruce, Roo Panes and Stokes William. Georgia Bruce first caught my ears when I reviewed her for the New Bands Panal on For Folk’s Sake. I was really taken back by her voice and maturity of songwriting for someone only 16. I featured her as my New Treat back in May and it was a great pleasure to ask her to play the night. She was absolutely stunning. Her early songs are quite new folk but I can see she is influenced by country music and that is reflected in some of the newer stuff, she also played a Dolly Parton cover which suited her voice wonderfully. The audience was completely silent, everyone so impressed which was fantastic and she really deserved it. She has got a great great future ahead of her.

Next up was Roo Panes who was also a New Treat of mine back in November. I first saw him support Stokes, William in the Troubadour, which is a great venue, last October and was blown away. His songwriting is really really good, and it was his melodies and songwriting which first caught my attention. Last time I saw him he played with a few members of Stokes William but this time he had his own band, a really great band too with a stunning string trio which fitted his voice perfectly. His set was beautiful, just perfect. He is playing Camden Proud on March 26th and I strongly recommend going along.

Stokes, William headlined the gig. I first heard about them as their song Zion was a clear highlight of the Communion record. After seeing them live at the Troubadour I simply fell in love with their sound and so jumped at the chance to get them to play the Roundhouse. They hadn’t played a gig since before Christmas before this gig so this was their big London come-back and boy did they make a come-back! They played better than I have ever seen them before. Some of their songs had a heavier, almost Arcade Fire feel about them, but still keeping the great folky spirit. The stage presence they have is brilliant, especially frontman Will, they can really get a crowd going. The audience wasn’t as good as in the Troubadour, where everyone was dancing like crazy, but they were very attentive and by the end everyone was really into it. A truly talented band and one which I’m sure one day will be filling much bigger venues. They are playing Camden Proud on March 24th and the Half Moon in Putney on April 13th.

The night was brilliant. All three bands feel so exciting and like they could all do such brilliant things with their talent and it was a great opportunity to showcase that talent. Folk music is definitely having a serge of popularity at the moment and with young bands like this appearing, it shows no signs of dying down. The future of music looks bright!

Christmas Gifts Part 1

A few nice Christmassy and not so Christmassy things to say thanks for reading this year and to wish you a very Happy Christmas.

Free Daughter EP

Elena Tonra was my New Treat #19 in April. She’s back, now as Daughter and has released some of her demos for free to download. It’s beautiful stuff, you can click the link below to download it and have a look at her myspace here. She is also playing one of the HMV Next Big Thing gigs next February 10th in the Borderline alongside Marcus Foster, Andrew Davie and Pete Roe (excellent line-up!)

Daughter Demos EP

Christmas songs!

Lots of bands have done some brilliant Christmas songs this year, both covers and originals. Here are a few for you to download for free!

Beach House- I Do Not Care for the Winter Sun (right click and save as)

Beach House are one of my bands of the year and this beautiful wintery song just tops it off.

Matthew and the Atlas- Fairytale of New York (click link and download)

A stunning cover of one of my favourite Christmas songs. This band are flawless.

Bear Driver- Walking in the Air (click link and download)

What Bear Driver have done with this track is wonderful. The whistling at the start, the slightly psychedelic guitars and that dreary dark Bear Driver sound have made this an excellent Christmas cover.

Ellen and the Escapades have also written a lovely original Christmas song. You can download it from Amazon or iTunes and here is a lovely video of it.

Summer Camp who are excellent have done a superb cover of The Waitresses’ Christmas Wrapping. You can also buy it on iTunes along with the whole Moshi Moshi Christmas album.

I also thought this was rather good, Stokes William covering Emmanuel but with there own special Stokes William touch.

And from a band which is brand new to me,

For Folk’s Sake its Christmas!

One of my favourite websites For Folk’s Sake has got some lovely artists to record some christmas songs and now they are releasing it for charity- how nice. It includes Emily and the Woods, Laura Hocking, Dear Winesberg and many more. The highlight of the EP for me comes from Leeds based Sam Airey whose covered In the Bleak Midwinter and added a bit of an original song on the end. You can pay what you like for the album, as long as its over £1 and all the profits go to the Integrated Cancer Centre at King’s College London. So this Christmas, it might be nice to give something back and head to the link below to download this little album.

Part 2 coming soon! Hope your all enjoying the Christmas build up and the snow if you have any!

Gig Review: Matthew and the Atlas EP Launch @ The Borderline

After listening to ‘Kingdom of Your Own’, the new EP from Matthew and the Atlas and giving it a 5/5 review, I was very much looking forward to the EP launch at the Borderline. I was also really looking forward to seeing two of the support acts, Daughter aka. Elena Tonra and Stokes, William.

Daughter played first, her stunning voice which first caught my attention on the Communion record filled the room and her sweet songs gained a lot of attention from the crowd. She was accompanied by an electric guitarist which added a wonderful dreamy feel to the set, and separating her from the haze of female singer/songwriters around at the moment.

Stokes William played next. I think this band are really really special. I have listened to them more and more after seeing them a few weeks ago at the Troubadour and the lyrics are beautiful. You can download ‘Honesty Box’ free from their myspace page, and do, it’s rather good. On stage they have a wonderful presence and the same energy was brought to The Borderline as it was to The Troubadour.

The next act was Rachel Sermanni who also features on the Communion record. Her music is very beautiful and although I felt she didn’t get the same concentration from the crowd as Elena Tonra, she gave a lovely set and a lovely introduction to the headline band. The room was packed, and everyone was waiting for what they came to see, the wonderful Matthew and the Atlas. As the band shyly walked onto the stage and launched into their first song the crowd fell silent. This band is incredible live. Matthew’s voice is strong and rustic and the harmonies between the band members and himself were flawless. ‘Come out of the Woods’ was a highlight of the set although they said it was the first time they had ever played it live. ‘I Followed Fires’, also from the new EP created a stir in the crowd as did the last song and encore ‘I Will Remain’.

I would highly recommend going to see this band live, it might not be long before they are playing much bigger venues. They play The Luminaire on the 16th December. Here is a video from the EP launch, thanks to the person that filmed this!

Gig Review: Stokes, William @ The Troubadour

Stokes, William first caught my attention on the Communion record. Their song ‘Zion’ which features Marcus Mumford is one of the standout tracks from the compilation, and so as soon as I moved to London I made it a priority to go and see them. The evening at The Troubadour consisted of 6 bands, although I only caught 4, and one of them happened to be the wonderful Emily and the Woods who I posted as a New Treat a few weeks ago. She sounds identical to on record, her voice is as strong and as beautiful and her songs are delicately sweet, I have a lot of hope for this girl.

After Emily and the Woods was a band called Robinson who I had never previously heard. His music is very engaging, elements of country, pop and gypsy folk combined to create some very catchy songs. His lyrics are very simple, speaking of dreams and the like, and he was accompanied by some wonderful musicians, the violinist in particular added a wonderful touch. Another highlight of the set was the clarinet duo which was stunning.

I’d also never heard of the next act, a great great shame as I am now a definite fan. Roo Panes is an incredible talent and he reminded me a lot of Johnny Flynn. Witty lyrics, beautiful arrangements and melodies to treat the ear. His set was lovely. He was accompanies by William Stokes on mandolin and also a viola which added a lovely touch. I might put him as a New Treat at some point, he’s now been spotted by Communion and he is definitely one to watch.

Stokes, William next. He is another incredible talent and one to watch. I could compare him to a lot of bands, Mumford & Sons definitely, also Arcade Fire, Fanfarlo etc., however he also brings breath of fresh air to the folk scene. ‘New-Folk’ can often be tagged as serious and a bit intense, this young man brings a playful aspect to it, it felt like a party on stage and that the audience were such a massive part of the band as well. A band for the people for sure, for the next generation of folkies.

The Troubadour is like a underground cave. It’s boiling hot and its pretty hard to see the bands if your not on the front row or if you don’t stand on the chairs. However, it was a wonderful venue, the audience were very lively and it felt like there was a wonderful community spirit in the room, a little like with Communion gigs. It’s good to see that despite the success of Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling, folk music still remains intimate and you can find some incredible talent in tiny rooms.

Album Review: Communion Compilation

I have talked about Communion a little before, but for people who don’t know, its basically a folk gig night put on in Leeds, London and Brighton. It was set up by Ben Lovett from Mumford and Sons and Kevin Jones, who was a member of Cherbourg before they split. The night has included the likes of Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale, JJ Pistolet and Mumford and Sons among many others. This album is an introduction to the whole London nu-folk movement, featuring both more establish artists such as Mumford and Sons and Johnny Flynn alongside new artists. It’s wonderful to see that this scene is ever growing and getting stronger, I think one of the special things about folk music is how it brings people together and I hope this compilation will bring more people into the folk movement.

The record is started off by a previously unreleased track by Johnny Flynn called ‘In the Honour of Industry’, a song with a different feel from A Laurm, showing he is continuing to develop as a very talented songwriter after his wonderful Sweet William EP. The collection goes on with stand out tracks from Stokes William, Andrew Davie, Peggy Sue, Elena Tonra and obviously ‘Sister’ by Mumford and Sons although few of the tracks slip into the background, proving that the folk movement has some very strong new acts and will continue to grow and grow. Songs such as Peter by Elena Tonra, a song apparently written about Peter Pan, and More than Letters Benjamin Francis Leftwich show how beautiful and strong the singer songwriter still is, and tracks such as That Sinking Feeling by Broadcast 2000 and February Snow by Peggy Sue shows how folk has developed into something very new and indie-inspired. Zion by Stokes, William, one of my favourites rings both Mumford and Sons and Johnny Flynn influences compared with the Jeffrey Lewis sounding Beans on Toast song. The record shows both the diversity and the community feel that the folk movement has. The collection is ended beautifully with the delicate sound of Matthew Corby, one of the few artists on the album that was new to me. The Chapter are as followed:

Chapter 1

Johnny Flynn – In The Honour Of Industry

Jay Jay Pistolet – Vintage Red

Marcus Foster – Circle In A Square

Stokes, William feat. Marcus Mumford – Zion

Pete Roe – Bellina

Chapter 2

Broadcast 2000 – That Sinking Feeling

Benjamin Francis Leftwich – More Than Letters

Jeremy Warmsley – How We Became

Brendan Campbell – Maudlin Reverie

Alessi’s Ark – Hands In The Sink

Chapter 3

Mumford and Sons – Sister

Matthew and the Atlas – Deadwood

Alan Pownall – Take Me

Elena Tonra – Peter

Beans On Toast – Things To Do Before You’re Thirty

Chapter 4

Kurran and the Wolfnotes – Pounding

Peggy Sue – February Snow

Andrew Davie – Lie Down In The Blood

Rachel Sermanni – My Friend Fire

Jesse Quin and the Mets – The Sculptor and the Stone

Matt Corby – Light Home

The record is out on vinyl on March 1st but you can pre-order it today from here and you will get your mp3′s to listen to now. I really do recommend it and its only about £10 so well worth it!

Best Tracks: Peter- Elena Tonra, Zion- Stokes, William, February Snow- Peggy Sue and Sister- Mumford and Sons

Rating: 4/5
