Live at Leeds: A Flying With Anna guide of who to see

I am unfortunately not gonna be at Live at Leeds this year as I am on holiday but I still want to do a feature about it as I love the event and the line-up this year is as good as ever. Here is my top 10 bands to see at the festival.

1. Anna Calvi

Holy Trinity Church 10:00pm

I have to admit that even though I’m not gonna be their the prospect of Anna Calvi playing in a church makes me very excited. Headlining the Holy Trinity Church where I have seem Alessi’s Ark, Johnny Flynn and Blue Roses play before, this is undoubtedly one not to miss. But get their early, its not the biggest of venues and its guaranteed to fill up.

2. Marcus Foster

Holy Trinity Church 3:00pm

Also playing in the Holy Trinity, Marcus Foster’s set is guaranteed to be the hidden treat of the festival. After seeing him a few weeks ago at Hoxton Bar and Grill, I am positive he has some incredible things coming and I would catch him live in venues like this while you can.

3. Alpines

A Nation of Shopkeepers 6:00pm

Alpines describe their music as ‘Night Pop’ and have been causing blogging waves for a while now will play Nation of Shopkeepers at 6pm. There music is infectiously good and although they could be compared to Beach House, La Roux or Portishead, they are ultimately something quite unique and I predict massive things for them.

4. Slow Club

Leeds University Stylus 7:30pm

One thing thats guaranteed from a Slow Club show is that you are going to have a good time. Everything else is up in the air. Comedy, acoustic sets, Christmas songs, and collapsing equipment have all been present when I have seen them play in the past, but all in the best spirit. They are a brilliant band, really underrated.

5. Saint Saviour

O2 Academy- 4:00pm

Saint Saviour has a gorgeous voice, quirky songs and is altogether not getting the attention she deserves. She has previously sung with Groove Armada and her energetic performances caught a lot of attention, she has released solo EP ‘Anatomy’ and its properly stunning.

6. Lanterns on the Lake

Holy Trinity Church 5:00pm

Long, long ago Lanterns on the Lake were my New Treat after front woman Hazel sent me some of their music to listen to. They have since done incredibly well and are now signed to the beautiful Bella Union label. I predict an album is on the horizon and with a voice like velvet and sparse and interesting arrangements, its likely to be very good.

7. Cloud Control

Holy Trinity Church 4:00pm

Aussie folk-rock band Cloud Control make really interesting, incredibly summery music and in a church its going to sound beautiful. I haven’t written enough about this band but that really should change!

8. Sam Airey

Holy Trinity Church 2:00pm

Everyone from Leeds will know of Sam Airey, he seems to be everywhere, play everywhere and support everyone. He is also bloody brilliant and a real treasure of the city. He has played Live at Leeds every year for a few years now and its always a packed room, this year he has been boosted up to the Holy Trinity Church which will be stunning. Check out his EP ‘The Oak Tree’ too, stunning listen.

9. Kassidy

O2 Academy 6:30pm

With a sound not a million miles away from Treetop Flyers, Kassidy made 70’s infused folk rock with a catchy pop edge.

10. James Blake

O2 Academy 5:00pm

James Blake has wowed me with covers of Feist and Joni Mitchell and I’ve heard he is pretty good live too. With a crystal clear voice and music which which mixes dubstep with Bon Iver calmness, he has big things predicted for him.

Hope everyone who is going enjoys the day! It’s a brilliant event, so get yourselves tickets if you haven’t already! Click here to see the full schedule for the day.

Christmas Gifts Part 1

A few nice Christmassy and not so Christmassy things to say thanks for reading this year and to wish you a very Happy Christmas.

Free Daughter EP

Elena Tonra was my New Treat #19 in April. She’s back, now as Daughter and has released some of her demos for free to download. It’s beautiful stuff, you can click the link below to download it and have a look at her myspace here. She is also playing one of the HMV Next Big Thing gigs next February 10th in the Borderline alongside Marcus Foster, Andrew Davie and Pete Roe (excellent line-up!)

Daughter Demos EP

Christmas songs!

Lots of bands have done some brilliant Christmas songs this year, both covers and originals. Here are a few for you to download for free!

Beach House- I Do Not Care for the Winter Sun (right click and save as)

Beach House are one of my bands of the year and this beautiful wintery song just tops it off.

Matthew and the Atlas- Fairytale of New York (click link and download)

A stunning cover of one of my favourite Christmas songs. This band are flawless.

Bear Driver- Walking in the Air (click link and download)

What Bear Driver have done with this track is wonderful. The whistling at the start, the slightly psychedelic guitars and that dreary dark Bear Driver sound have made this an excellent Christmas cover.

Ellen and the Escapades have also written a lovely original Christmas song. You can download it from Amazon or iTunes and here is a lovely video of it.

Summer Camp who are excellent have done a superb cover of The Waitresses’ Christmas Wrapping. You can also buy it on iTunes along with the whole Moshi Moshi Christmas album.

I also thought this was rather good, Stokes William covering Emmanuel but with there own special Stokes William touch.

And from a band which is brand new to me,

For Folk’s Sake its Christmas!

One of my favourite websites For Folk’s Sake has got some lovely artists to record some christmas songs and now they are releasing it for charity- how nice. It includes Emily and the Woods, Laura Hocking, Dear Winesberg and many more. The highlight of the EP for me comes from Leeds based Sam Airey whose covered In the Bleak Midwinter and added a bit of an original song on the end. You can pay what you like for the album, as long as its over £1 and all the profits go to the Integrated Cancer Centre at King’s College London. So this Christmas, it might be nice to give something back and head to the link below to download this little album.

Download For Folk’s Sake Its Christmas

Part 2 coming soon! Hope your all enjoying the Christmas build up and the snow if you have any!

Festival Review: Live at Leeds 2010

Live at Leeds is a day festival in Leeds which took place yesterday. It involves running round a city, finding new music and listening to great bands. A few days ago I did a folk guide of my recommendations of who to see at Live at Leeds. I managed to see quite alot of these bands and a few others too. Overall I had a really brilliant day!

My Live at Leeds began with Melodica, Melody and Me, a London based 6-piece (although there was only 5 of them on this occasion). They make upbeat folk music, resembling Noah and the Whale in their ‘fun fun fun’ days. They were sweet and had a lot of energy, which was good for a band playing so early in the day. They are unlikely to find commercial success but at least they will bring a smile to a lot of faces.

I then ran to the Cockpit Room 3 to find a packed out room for Leeds-based folk starlet Sam Airey. He is a very talented songwriter and has a relaxed but confident stage presence. I have seen him solo before but he also had a cellist and backing vocalist which was a nice change. His EP ‘Seasons Change’ is very beautiful and highly recommended.

The main band I wanted to see was Blue Roses who were on at the Holy Trinity Church at 4. After last years disappointment of not being able to see certain bands because the venue was full I decided to head to the Church straight after Sam Airey. It also meant I got to catch two bands who are fairly new to me, Glaciers and Paul Thomas Saunders. Glaciers are the solo project of Nicolas Burrows. He sings acoustic-indie songs of which most seemed to be about tides and specific places. His voice live is much more impressive than on record and it has a lovely freshness to it.

I have seen Paul Thomas Saunders before and again I was very impressed. For a band that looks like school children they make a remarkably mature sound. They have already come along way in establishing themselves as one of Leeds best alternative acts but if the song writing talent of Paul Thomas Saunders only gets better then Leeds have created quite an extraordinary unique artist.

Then for Blue Roses, another solo project, this time of Bradford born Laura Groves. If beauty had a sound it would be Laura Groves’ voice. A truly stunning talent for the most beautiful venue in Leeds. Blue Roses may be shadowed by other similar artists such as Joanna Newsom or Laura Marling but in a venue of these acoustics there is no hiding her beauty and it rises above any comparisons or criticisms. She also has a unique art of making the songs quite different from on the album, particularly the vocal melodies but still manages to keep the stunning delicate folk sound of the songs from her 2009 self titled album. If you don’t have her album, you really must get it! In my ‘Best New Albums of 2009′ list it was number 2!

After three bands in the Holy Trinity I headed back to the Cockpit Room 3 for Matthew P. An artist I knew little about but after listening to a few tracks on his myspace which instantly reminded me of Johnny Flynn, I decided to go and see him. He was not quite what I expected, more Paolo Nutini than Johnny Flynn. Still, he has a lovely voice and a charming stage presence and if he keeps creating the type of songs which 14 year old girls fall in love with, he could be quite a success.

After a failed attempt to find the venue that Kill It Kid were playing, I went to Leeds Met to see Esben and the Witch. They are a band who I have loved ever since hearing the haunting wails of Rachael Davies voice on ‘Marching Song’. Her voice on record blew me away but it in no way justifies her live abilities. They were phenomenal, there live sound and the atmosphere they create gives me goose bumps. They are about to embark on a UK tour supporting The Big Pink and also have a few summer festivals planned, if you can catch them live, really do, incredible!

After that spine tingling performance, I headed to the Brudenell Social Club. I wanted to see Ellen and the Escapades at 10 and decided to get their early to make sure I got in. I caught part of Fran Rodgers set last year at the Holy Trinity Church and this year I was able to see her whole set. She plays ‘nice’ folk, the sort of thing you find at folk festivals. However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s not the sort of folk that is going to blow you away but it was very pleasant to listen to and she has a very comfortable stage attitude.

Then for half an hour I had to sit through a band who played heavy rock music, with no vocal line and what seemed like only 1 song. But it was worth it to see the wonderful Ellen and the Escapades. I first saw Ellen and the Escapades last year supporting Fanfarlo, they blew me away. Since then they have come a long way, winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and now set to release an EP on July 12th. There like a 70’s folk-rock band, which the same energy and hippie festival vibe about them, they will be perfect at Glastonbury. They played all the usual energetic numbers and a few new tracks which were engaging as ever.  I absolutely love this band and wish them all the best in the future, I think and hope they will go far! LOVE Ellen and the Escapades!

Overall, a really good day with some brilliant performances. Cannot wait for next year! Hope everyone else enjoyed the day too!

Live at Leeds: A Folk Guide

So Live at Leeds is next weekend! It’s really exciting, so many good bands playing! However, sometimes you might not know who do go and see, especially if you haven’t heard of some of the bands. Then you could end up going to see someone random who you choose because you like the band name and end up missing someone you would love. This is what happened to me a little last year, and so I am going to do a guide of who I suggest are the best people to go and see at Live at Leeds! This is my list of the top 10 people to see and then a few top tips for the day. The full line-up timetable is here.

1. Blue Roses- 4:00 @ Holy Trinity Church Myspace

I am really excited about this one! If you haven’t heard blue roses before her music is so beautiful. She the voice of an angel and this is coupled with delicate folk songs. If that wasn’t enough, she is playing in the Holy Trinity Church! It’s a stunning venue and perfect for someone like Laura Groves. This really is a must see!

2. Ellen and the Escapades- 10:00 @ Brudenell Social Club Myspace

I have loved Ellen and the Escapades for ages now but they are finally getting noticed after winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition. The Brudenell Social club is also a really nice venue and is the first place I saw them play. They are a treat live, but get their early as it may be busy!

3. Esben and the Witch- 7:00 @ Leeds Met Myspace

Not the best venue, but I think it might be worth it just to hear Rachael Davies voice. They make the most incredible haunting music, think the XX with Florence on vocals. It’s much heavier than most of the stuff on this list, but it could be a nice alternative to a day of finger-picking guitars.

4. Sam Airey- 1:30 @ Cockpit 3 Myspace

I love Sam Airey at the moment. Listen to his song ‘Row Upon Row’, beautiful stuff. I think he’s set to be the next Johnny Flynn, catch him in this tiny venue now before he gets bigger and bigger!

5. Exlovers- 3:00 @ Brudenell Social Club Myspace

I think I am going to have to miss this as the Brudenell is a bit of a trek from the centre of Leeds and I want to see Blue Roses. If you don’t want to see Blue Roses though, I definitely recommend Exlovers as an alternative. They have sweet boy-girl harmonies with subtle instrumentation and the effect is beautiful. ‘Just A Silhouette’ is highly recommended.

6. Matthew P- 5:30 @ Cockpit 3 Myspace

Not far from Sam Airey, but more of a Johnny Flynn in the sunshine feel. Listen to ‘On Top’, a perfect summer song. I only heard him for the first time recently, but I am definitely a new fan.

7. Kill It Kid- 6:30 @ Leeds Uni Mine Myspace

Never been to this venue before but might try to catch Kill It Kid there. They are very impressive on record. They remind me of the Arcade Fire and Q magazine described them as ‘Fiddle-frenzy jazz/blues.

8. Goldheart Assembly- 3:00 @ The Faversham Myspace

For any fans of Local Natives or Boy and Bear, go and see Goldheart Assembly. With a mixture of acoustic harmonies and a whole lot of other stuff in their, they create quite a beautiful effect. They have recently recorded an album in a Norfolk Steam Train museum, which sounds, interesting. For those who don’t catch them at Live at Leeds they are playing Nation Of Shopkeepers on the 23rd May as well.

9. Woodpigeon- 8:30 @ Holy Trinity Church Myspace

I really like some Woodpigeon stuff and not others so I am curious to see what he will be like live. Some is a little like Bon Iver, some is quite instrumental and some is quite alternative. This is a really beautiful venue so I think it will be really good, hopefully!

10. Melody, Melodica and Me- 1:00 @ The Well Myspace

Such a wonderful way to start the day off! Melody, Melodica and Me are like really happy folk music. It all sounds very handmade and unproduced, which is really nice. I first heard them about a year ago and I keep popping back to there myspace for a listen so I am looking forward to seeing them live.

The bands that nearly made the list… Three Blind Wolves, Jesca Hoop, Nic Dawson Kelly, Lone Wolf, Gary Stewart, Paul Thomas Saunders, Fran Rodgers, Fool’s Gold, Darwin Deez and Maggie8.

A few tips…

  • If your planning on going to the Brudenell Social Club or Royal Park Cellars, set off a good half an hour before any band you want to see starts playing. Its quite a bus journey! If anyone needs directions, feel free to contact me and I will tell you the way!
  • For any bands after 8-ish, I would recommend getting there to see the band before, otherwise the venue may fill up and you might not get in.
  • If you want to see Wild Beasts, who are headlining at 9, get there at least an hour earlier as a there may already be a queue building.
  • Don’t forget to exchange your ticket for a wristband in the morning! You can do this at Leeds Met from 10am onwards.

If anyone needs any help or questions about it all, feel free to contact me. Have a great day!

New Music 4

I have been listening to a lot of Boy and Bear and Matthew and the Atlas recently but I’ve probably blogged about them too much so here is some other things I have been listening to recently!

I really live She & Him and this song is really fun and summery! I would like them a whole lot more though if they toured or did festivals or something :)

Sam Airey is from Leeds but I have noticed that he has been doing a few shows with King Charles so its good he is getting noticed. His EP Seasons Change is out now and this is one of the songs from it called Row Upon Row. The woman at the beginning of this video is a bit annoying but most of the balcony TV people seem to be.

Johnny Flynn has given away a free track of ‘Kentucky Pill’, the opener from his new album ‘Been Listening’ with I think is out in June. Its a brilliant track and I hope the rest of the album is just as good!

Freelance Whales are a new band from New York, there album ‘Weather Vanes’ is out now and you can get a free track on there myspace here. I don’t really like the singers voice, but other than that they are really good.

This song is about a year old now, but it is really good. It reminds me of spring too, perfect for now. I like the video too.

Have a nice weekend all!

The Best of Northern Talent!

Recently I have been listening to a lot of bands from up north, which is where I am from. There have been lots of good bands from up north in the last few years, this is just a little selection of some of my favourites.

Slow Club

Slow Club are brilliant, its like really fun folk. They are from Sheffield. They are going on a UK tour in May and its highly recommended. I saw them at Glastonbury and they are really funny live. This is Sunday, one of their more mellow tracks but I think my favourite.

Blue Roses

Blue Roses are absolutely stunning. If you haven’t got their album, just get it. Its beautiful. Laura Groves is from Shipley, near Bradford and they will also be playing at Live at Leeds on May 1st.

Ellen and the Escapades

Ellen and the Escapades who recently won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition are from Leeds. They are fronted by Ellen Smith and the video below is of her playing one of their songs solo. She has the most beautiful voice. They will also be playing Live at Leeds.

Sam Airey

Maybe Leeds’ answer to Johnny Flynn? A very talented singer and songwriter and also very good live. I’ve seen him support Ellen and the Escapades before and I will hopefully catch him at Live at Leeds.

Thom Stone

I saw Thom Stone supporting Mumford and Sons in Manchester and then put him as a New Treat a few weeks later. On his myspace he has a beautiful song with Laura Marling.

Also check out Lucy and the Caterpillar, Gary Stewart (listen to ‘Behind the Door’) and Fran Rodgers.

I’ve probably missed someone really good off, but I hope you enjoy listening to this lot for now.
