10 Acts to catch at End Of The Road Festival 2011

This year will be my first End of the Road. Every year it boasts a wonderful line-up and every year I afterwards get told how wonderful it is as a festival, well this year I decided it was a must. And when Joanna Newsom was announced as a headliner, there was really no question for me about whether or not to go. Tickets have sold out but if you are going, here’s a few of my recommended must sees (although theres barely a bad band on the line-up!).

1. Joanna Newsom

The gorgeous, amazing Joanna Newsom will headline the final night of End of the Road festival. Do not miss this!

2. Laura Marling

Always stunning, look out for her experiments in awkwardness which have been happening at most of the festivals she’s played this summer. Keep up to date with her twitter to find out more.

3. Willy Mason

My highlight of Wood Festival and still one of my highlights of the summer. He’s good on record but really out-do’s himself live, completely stunning.

4. Other Lives

A band I have done a fare bit of blogging about the past few months. They make quite an exciting experimental folk sound and definitely not one to miss.

5. The Staves

One of the most beautiful new live acts around. Harmonies that will melt your mind.

6. Nathaniel Rateliff

Someone who I always love to watch live. Flawless voice and wonderful onstage character.

7. Caitlin Rose

I’ve seen Caitlin countless times but wouldn’t miss the opportunity to see her again.

8. Beirut

Disappointed me in Hyde Park but impressed me at Benicassim. Who knows what they’ll be like when they headline End of the Road…

9. Best Coast

Guaranteed to bring super happy vibes to a possibly dull and dreary English day.

10. Big Deal

You can catch the first listen of their upcoming debut album ‘Lights’ over on NME at the moment. Its woozy, lazy day summery loveliness. All very simple songs with a dreamy edge.

New Music 22

After a short break at various festivals I am back and I’ve got lots of exciting things coming your way very shortly. I’m gonna start with a regular post of some new music I’ve been listening to. Enjoy!

While I was away the Mercury Prize nominations were announced. I don’t think the list is as strong as last year but I am really happy that Anna Calvi has been nominated with her wonderful self-titled album. It has also brought my attention to the album by King Creosote and Jon Hopkins which I am rather liking at the moment. This is Bubble from the album Diamond Mine.

BalconyTV make lots of nice music videos with great bands on balconies across the world. Back in 2008 they introduced me to Mumford and Sons and they now have a massive collection of wonderful videos. This is a new one of theirs and its Nathaniel Rateliff, and some new material from him. I love Nathaniel’s music, his voice is incredibly soothing to listen to.

Roo Panes was my New Treat long ago and he has since played a gig I have put on and is in general catching more and more attention. And rightly so, his music is stunning. He will be releasing an EP soon and I think this song will be from it, its called I’ll Move Mountains.

I mentioned Bella Spinks a while ago, she has just made a rather beautiful video for her song ‘Words’. She gigs quite a lot in London and I can’t wait to check one out.

I can’t quite remember how I came across the Amazing Broken Man, but he’s stolen my heart anyway. Simply beautiful star-gazing music.

Bella Union signing Jonathan Wilson releases his debut album ‘Gentle Spirit’ on Monday. It’s definitely worth a listen, stunning. You can hear the whole album on Soundcloud but this is the last track on the album ‘Rolling Universe’.

And in case you haven’t already heard, Laura Marling has released a new song ‘Sophia’ to be taken off her new album out on September 12th. Its going to be such a stunning set of songs, cannot wait. This is Sophia, just incase you haven’t already heard it.

This is Louise of Louise and the Pins playing new song Bell Jar. Simply stunning! They were wonderful at the Joe Bloggers night at Dingwalls last week, it was great to have them play. Really looking forward to what comes next from these ladies.

I missed Rachel Sermanni at the Great Escape which I was really gutted about, especially as I was informed it was stunning. This is a new song and it is wonderful as usual. I really hope she released something soon!

Nathaniel Rateliff was on Jools Holland this week, they only showed one song on the Tuesday show but I’m hoping they’ll show another on the Friday show. This is a different song, this is from the Secret Sessions and its called I Am. Check out some of the other secret sessions, they also have Marcus Foster, Emily and the Woods and Alex Winston.

As the Marcus Foster session is so great, I’ve posted that here too.

I went to see Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell on Monday night at The Slaughtered Lamb. I first fell in love with them when I got there EP early last year, you can see my very old and very swoony 5/5 review here. Jonny did a solo song on the night called ‘Dixons Street’. He wrote it as part as a tenancy agreement when he moved into a new house in Newcastle. Its very amusing but his songwriting talents truly shine through.

Another band I missed at The Great Escape is Dark Dark Dark. There album Wild Go is excellent, go out and buy it. The best song is Daydreaming, which I have posted before, but this is a nice acoustic version from Watch Listen Tell.

Matt Corby in a field. I don’t know what the songs called but its rather lovely in the setting.

I saw Hurray for the Riff Raff last night at The Magpie’s Nest and thought they were great. It was just a fiddle player and her singing last night but this is a bit more built up and reminds me of Dark Dark Dark.

Been finding lots of new things recently, as well as a growing obsession with Fleetwood Mac after a documentary of theirs was on BBC but yes, this is some other lovely new stuff.

This is Sibylle Baier, I found her on For Folk’s Sake and it was love instantly. She recorded a number of songs between 1970 and 1973, in Germany where she grew up. She never released them and instead focused on having a family. Then, in 2006, now living in America, her son got hold of these recordings and sent them to some family friends, one of which passed it on to a record label and so the album ‘Colour Green’ was made. And what a stunning collection of songs it is. Delicate, emotional and stunningly beautiful, I hope after so many years she will finally receive some well deserved recognition. This is Tonight, which is the first track from the album, but I recommend it all, especially ‘I Lost Something to the Hills’ and ‘The End’.

Alpines have been causing a bit of a blogging stir recently. Their song Drive was played on the Zane Lowe show a while ago but this is my favourite song, ‘Ice & Arrows’. They describe their music as Night-Pop and echos of Zola Jesus, Lykke Li and Bat for Lashes certainly shine through, really looking forward to whats next.

I saw Matt Corby at Communion last week and was blown away. His voice is incredible live and his songs are also very nice, this is My False. I think he might have a good year, so keep an eye and an ear out for more.

Lykke Li’s next album ‘Wounded Rhymes’, an excellent album name if I may say so, on Februay 28th. A few of the songs from the album have already emerged and all are wonderful, this is one which surfaced the other day, its called ‘Love Out Of Lust’ and she has said it is one of her personal favourites from the album.

James Blake has covered one of my favourite songs ever, Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You. When I heard he had covered it I was a a little apprehensive of what he would have done with it, but then I heard it and was blown away. His voice is crystal clear and he has kept the song incredibly simple. Beautiful beautiful.

I also saw Nathaniel Rateliff at Communion, who was also wonderful. I have just got a copy of his album which I will review soon, but this is my highlight of it at the moment.

This isn’t exactly new but I would like to mention it as I haven’t really talked about Villagers. I went to see him at Concrete in Shoreditch last week, the sound quality in that venue is unbelievable. It made me realise how important that is for a performance and how all venues should really sound like that one does! Villagers were wonderful too, his voice is flawless, every song was note perfect. This is a lovely version of ‘Set the Tigers Free’.

In case you haven’t already heard, Laura Marling won a Brit! I was really shocked but also really really pleased, real talent finally being noticed. Arcade Fire also won two awards and Mumford and Sons won best album for ‘Sigh No More’ so overall it was a very very good night for good music. This is a new Laura song which she performed at the Folk Awards a week or so before the Brits, its wonderful, ringing sounds of 70′s folk and clear Joni Mitchell influences in the voice.

Thats all for now folks, enjoy!
