Festival Guide 2011: Part 2

Continuing on with some of my recommended festivals this summer. And a rather folky bunch…

End of the Road

One of my personal favourite line-ups of the summer. End of the Road boasts both Marling and Newsom on the same bill, that alone persuaded me. But they also have a whole host of other brilliant people, an idillic setting and apparently some peacocks running round.

Tickets: £145

Dates: 2-4th September

Headliners: Beirut, Joanna Newsom, Mogwai

I Recommend: Laura Marling, Lykke Li, Willy Mason, Cailtin Rose, Other Lives and Best Coast

Green Man

Another festival with an almost as good line-up is Green Man. Taking place in the Welsh hills and with Fleet Foxes headlining, you can’t go much wrong.

Tickets: £135

Dates: 19-21st August

Headliners: Fleet Foxes, Explosions in the Sky, Iron & Wine

I recommend: Laura Marling, Noah and the Whale, Alessi’s Ark, Marcus Foster, Ellen and the Escapades.

Wilderness

A brand new festival for 2011, and looking like its gonna be one of the most special. Wilderness is in a beautiful setting with swimming lakes, fine dining, a spa, special performances and theatre, ceilidhs. Couldn’t really ask for much more. And then you check out the line-up!

Tickets: £99.50 early bird

Dates: 12-14th August

Headliners: Antony and the Johnsons, Gogol Bordello, Laura Marling

I recommend: The Low Anthem, Dry the River, Daniel Johnston + more tba

Cambridge Folk Festival

So this list seems to becoming a list of festivals Laura Marling is playing at, and surprise surprise, she’s back headlining this one too. Ah well. Cambridge Folk Festival is the biggest and best folk festival in the UK, and this year it boasts a wonderful assortment of new folk and old folk acts.

Tickets: £114

Dates: 28th-31st July

Headliners: Laura Marling, Richard Thompson, Mary Chapin Carpenter

I recommend: Villagers, James Vincent McMorrow, Caitlin Rose, Dry the River, Rachel Sermanni, Louise and the Pins, Pete Roe, Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou..

Firefly

I am going to end the post with a little folky festival which looks lovely, called Firefly. They have scored a rather good line-up and the concept of campfires in the intimate surrounds sounds wonderful.

Tickets: £55

Dates: 12-14th August

Headliners: Morning Parade, Marcus Foster, Kyla La Grange

I recommend: Scott Matthews, Patch William and more tba.

A Festival Guide: The Folk Way

Festival season is nearly upon us but it’s often a decision deciding which to go to. Here’s my guide of some of the best festivals this year!

Glastonbury- 23rd-27th June- Somerset

People are always trying to find ways to criticise Glastonbury, but truth is, you can’t beat it. The line-up is so extensive their is easily something for everyone. The atmosphere and size too cannot be beaten. This year is its 40th anniversary so I’d expect surprises around every corner!

Best of the Line-up: Mumford and Sons, Laura Marling, Vampire Weekend, Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding, Ellen and the Escapades, Local Natives, Midlake, Lissie, The Middle East, could literally go on and on.

Tickets: SOLD OUT but some rumours of another re-sale

Hop Farm- 2-3rd July- Kent

Hop Farm is only a 2-day festival but is totally sponsorship free, and this year has without a doubt one of the most incredible line-ups. Saturday is the folky day, with Bob Dylan as the headliner. Their is also no VIP zone so all the acts mix with the festival-goers.

Best of the Line-up: Bob Dylan, Mumford and Sons, Ray Davies, Laura Marling and Johnny Flynn

Tickets: Friday- £45, Saturday £65, 2 days- £110, Camping- £25

Green Man- 20-22nd August- South Wales

I am in love with this festival line-up! It’s also set in one of the most beautiful places in the UK, sounds pretty perfect! If you are an unsigned band they are also running a competition, giving you the chance to play. Their have been some pretty good entries so far, i’ll do a feature on that at some point.

Best of the Line-up: Joanna Newsom, Beirut, Mumford and Sons, Laura Marling, Johnny Flynn, First Aid Kit, Matthew and the Atlas, and Johnny Kearney and Lucy Farrell.

Tickets: Weekend Camping £120, NUS £104, Teen £50

Summer Sundae- 13-15th August- Leicester

Quite uniquely set in a park in the middle of Leicester city, this boutique festival includes a rather folk filled line-up this year!

Best of the Line-up: Mumford and Sons, Johnny Flynn, Fanfarlo, Ellen and the Escapades, Lissie, The Low Anthem, Local Natives and Slow Club

Latitude-15-18th July- Suffolk

Last year the line-up was pretty poor, so this year they look to have gone all out, and its incredible! The whole place seems lovely too!

Best of the Line-up: Florence and the Machine, Belle and Sebastian, Vampire Weekend, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, The XX, Noah and the Whale, The Middle East, First Aid Kit and Midlake.

Tickets: SOLD OUT

End of the Road- 10-12th September- Dorset

The alternative ender for the festival season, rivalled only by Bestival, which also boasts a pretty good line-up this year. End of the Road is a tiny festival in gardens covered in fairy lights and a lovely selection of folk from every angle.

Best of the Line-up: Iron & Wine, The Low Anthem, The Antlers, Diane Cluck, Johnny Kearney and Lucy Farrell and Freelance Whales

Tickets: £130 for a weekend, £120 for youth

Isle of Wight- 11-13th June- Newport, Isle of Wight

The proper hippie deal from a big and friendly festival. I think this is possibly the best headliners from any major festival as it includes the Strokes and Paul McCartney.

Best of the Line-up: Paul McCartney, Florence and the Machine, Vampire Weekend, Local Natives, Noah and the Whale and Marina and the Diamonds

Tickets: Weekend with camping £150

If anyone has any more lovely folky festivals that they think should be added to the guide, let me know and I’ll add it! Hope everyone is as excited about summer as me!
