Songs of the Year: Part 2

Washington – I Believe you Liar

Not that into her other stuff, but this song is stunning.

Real Estate- It’s Real

I don’t own this album, maybe I should. But I think this song is just summery goodness.

Kurt Vile- Jesus Fever

This song makes me want to buy a convertible car and drive around in the California sunshine. The best from his album, but its all very good.

Florence and the Machine- Lover to Lover

By far my favourite song from the second album, so much soul.

The Antlers- Hounds

Soo dreamy. Damn good album too.

Charles Bradley- The World (Is Going Up in Flames)

This man slipped under the radar, which is a massive shame. This song is incredible, and so is the rest of his stuff. So much soul and pain in his voice.

Albums of 2011: 9. Florence & the Machine – Ceremonials

Florence & the Machines debut album ‘Lungs’ was released in 2009, to a Mercury Prize nomination, a No. 1, a BRIT win and much celebrated praise of this new talent. She had a lot to live up to on this album, she somehow though, managed to do it, and not just do it, but better her debut and make an absolute triumph of a record.

Some of that rawness and slightly spontaneous spirit of the first album is gone, but whats been left is much more polished songwriting, a better vocal and a tremendous album that managed not only to let Florence leave her artistic integrity in place, but also give her a huge amount of commercial success. Ceremonials from the opening song ‘Only If For the Night’ this album is full of massive hits, incredible power in the vocal and not a forgettable tune on the album. Florence is destined to be the next huge superstar act from the UK, and after such a brilliant year, releasing this album and selling out three dates in Alexandra Palace for March 2012.

Standout Tracks: Lover to Lover, What the Water Gave Me, and No Light No Light

New Music 26

I’ve written loads and loads of new treats recently, which is great. But theres also been loads of new songs from bands you might already know released. Here’s a celebration to some of them.

Starting with the wonderful, wonderful Coldplay and ‘Charlie Brown’ from their new album ‘Mylo Xyloto’ which is brilliant in my opinion. They write so many stunning melodies and this song is no exception.

Summer Camp have now released their debut album, ‘Welcome to Condale’. It’s everything I expected, super 80′s, electro, amazing melodies, and just a wonderful collection of songs. This is the title track, ‘Welcome to Condale’ and its great.

Another brilliant new album is ‘Ceremonials’, from Florence and the Machine. ‘Lungs’ was an epic debut and I wasn’t sure whether this album was going to live up to it, but its completely exceeded my exceptions. The amount of massive tunes on this album is astonishing. So many classics. I went to her album launch last week at Hackney Empire and everyone should most certainly be getting excited about her touring again.

Rachel Sermanni is such a talent. She is realising an EP soon called ‘Black Currents’ which has been produced by Communion’s Ian Grimble. This track ‘The Fog’ is taken from it, I think its lovely.

Jamie N Commons might be one of those ‘one to watch’ sort of artists. I like what he’s doing, its really different, a bit Johnny Cash. This is his single ‘The Preacher’

Fanfarlo made one really really great album and then they went away for what seemed like ages. But their back, with a different sound. This is so much more indie/electro, but that essence of great songwriting is still there.

I pretty much fell in love with Jonny Kearney and Lucy Farrell’s mini album ‘North Farm Sessions’. So stunningly beautiful. They have just released their debut full length album and I have pretty much fallen in love all over again. This song ‘Green Leaved Trees’ is the first single to be taken from the album.

I have already featured this track, ‘The Lion’s Roar’ from First Aid Kit, but I thought this video was so good that I also had to include it. The second album is out on January 24th and I am really looking forward to hearing it!

Matt Corby has released a new song called ‘Brother’. It’s quite different from his old stuff, definitely heavier, but still a real good song. He has a new EP entitled ‘Into the Flame’ out in November.

I cam across this girl on Soundcloud, she’s called Abigail Washburn and reminds me a little of Sarah Jarosz. Have a listen and download this song for free.

One band to check out is Youth Lagoon. They are making hauntingly beautiful music which is causing a stir on hype machine etc. This song is ‘Bobby’, also check out ‘Montana’.

This is really gorgeous, its from Marissa Nadler and is a cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Winter Lady.

Florence and the Machine releases her second album ‘Ceremonials’ at the end of this month. I can’t wait, and the snippets we’ve had from it so far show that its gonna be good. This is ‘Shake it Out’.

I found this track from Armand Margjeka on a mixtape from another blog. Their sound is really nice, especially the tones of the voices in the harmonies. The song is called ‘Alive’.

Cold Specks was one of my New Treats a while back. I’ve posted this track ‘Holland’ before, but its now been released as a single with B-side ‘Old Stepstone’.

There is a really excellent documentary on the BBC about The Troubadour and specifically Carole King and James Taylor. Go and watch it here. And listen to this song, because its perfect.

New Music 20

We are now up to 20 of these posts! It started out as a bit of a ‘music I am listening to right now’ sort of thing, and I guess thats what its still about, but its also hopefully things you might not have heard. Hope you have been enjoying this series, here’s somethings for you this week!

Florence is back! Well, a new album isn’t due till the end of summer. But this Buddy Holly video has been unleashed onto YouTube and its great, I hope this sort of thing influences the rest of the album. Its much more raw sounding, which I like.

The new Fleet Foxes album has been slowly growing on me, I am now listening to it a lot, and this is my favourite tune from it. Just delightful!

Beirut is back, i’ll be seeing him in Hyde Park with Arcade Fire on June 30th for the first time which should be really great (Mumford and Sons too!). He is releasing a new album called ‘The Rip Tide’ on August 31st, followed by Manchester and London shows as well as a headline set at End of the Road festival. What a great summer for Beirut fans! This song is called ‘East Harlem’, I like it a lot, its quite sparse and more chilled than some of the older stuff, but in a good way.

The new soundtrack from the film Submarine has been raved about a lot and rightly so. I think its better than the actual film. Its made up of original songs from Alex Turner. All the songs are lovely and chilled and I think may become quite an integral part to my summer soundtrack. This is ‘Stuck on the Puzzle’.

Oh Land was the lady to see at this years Great Escape. I went to see her but couldn’t find the venue, which is a shame, she could be big news in the future. This song is incredibly catchy. She reminds me of a mixture between Lykke Li and Ellie Goulding.

Stealing Sheep have just released a new EP called ‘I am the Rain’ its lovely, you can listen to it on Spotify if you like. I like this band a lot. Heres a little video from when they recorded the EP in Abbey Road Studios.

The Staves completely blew me away at Bushstock, really beautiful stuff. I’ve been listening to their EP a lot, its beautiful. I hope they record something else soon so I don’t have to keep repeating the same 3 songs over and over.

I am going to end with a clip from the epic performance Arcade Fire gave at Coachella this year. I have watched almost their whole set now on youtube and it just seems EPIC. So excited to see them in Hyde Park this summer and then again at Benicassim in Spain. Incredible live band! This is the wonderful ‘Mountains Beyond Mountains’ from The Suburbs.

Festival Review: Glastonbury 2010!

How to start?! Well, this weekend was simply the best of my life. Glastonbury is the most amazing, magical and brilliant place in the world. This year was the 40th anniversary and there was such a wonderful feeling of celebration about. I hope that if you have never been before you will go sometime, it simply changed my life. This is going to be pretty hard to review, so much to talk about but lets give it ago! Most of the photos are either my own, from the official Glastonbury website or from the BBC Glastonbury website.

I arrived at about 6pm on Friday night as I had my music exam on Friday morning and so the first band I saw were Vampire Weekend. I’ve seen them live before and they have a really wonderful energy. I wasn’t that near the front but everyone was still dancing along. Unfortunately, some silly person decided to put Vampire Weekend, Florence and the Machine and Mumford and Sons on all at the same time, so we left and headed to the Other Stage to see Florence.

I simply love Mumford and Sons, they are my all time favourite live band but I choose to go and see Florence because I thought the chance to see her again might be pretty rare whereas I have already got 3 Mumford gigs planned for the next few months. If you haven’t see Florence live, she too is incredible. Sometimes she’s better than others but her voice never fails to amaze me and she has so much charisma and passion for what she’s doing, its a really wonderful thing to watch. She also never fails to wear something pretty amazing, this time a leotard/frilly wedding dress was the chosen frock.

Next up was Dizzee Rascel. He has pretty much taken over radio for the last year, his songs being incredibly catchy and creating a perfect mixture between dance and hip-hop music. The highlight of his set was when he was joined by Florence for a rendition of ‘You’ve Got the Dirtee Love’ and then obviously the crowds reaction to Bonkers was pretty much what the title says.

Gorillaz were the Friday night headliners and after stepping in for U2 who dropped out there was a lot of expectations for Damon Albarn and his crew. I was quite disappointed. Yeah, there was some pretty good special guests and the graphics were great but they mostly played new material which only the proper fans knew and when it came to the hits like ‘Feel Good Inc’, I was a bit bored.

The Saturday music began with I Blame Coco who I ended up watching mostly from the top of the tower in the Park. She’s got good things to come this girl, she’s a bit Marina and the Diamonds-ish but a bit cooler! I then headed up to the Acoustic stage for Ellen and the Escapades, one of the bands I had been most looking forward to seeing at the festival. If you follow this blog you will know that I pretty much LOVE Ellen and the Escapades and as they are Leeds based I felt very proud when they won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition and got the opportunity to perform on some of the main stages at the festival. They were brilliant as usual! Same energy and a flawless performance. Everybody around me seemed really impressed too so hopefully they will have made lots of new fans.

Next up was Lissie, one of my favourite albums of the year so far and also one of my favourite new live performers. Her voice is stunning and she seems lovely and friendly on stage too. I would definitely recommend checking out Lissie if you can as I can only see her getting bigger!

Beach House next back at the Park and another of my favourite albums of the year. I really really like the sound Beach House create, dreamy but dark and I think that definitely came across live. They are possibly a little better on record because of the production on the album but still a wonderful performance.

Then headed across to the John Peel tent to find we couldn’t even get in the packed out tent for Marina and the Diamonds. Marina is a very eccentric performer but as I couldn’t really see her that was lost, but I’m sure people at the front enjoyed it!

Headed back up to the Park to get a good spot for Laura Marling (ended up on the front row!) but also managed to catch Candi Staton which was pretty ace to be truthful! It was a bit of a weird set, mostly covers of old karaoke classics but everyone was having a good dance including a rather wild Marcus Mumford backstage.

Then for Laura. She is stunning, just stunning live. She gets better and better everytime I see her, her development as a performer since the first time I saw her  at Glastonbury 2008 has been incredible. The audience was particularity lovely in this one, although someone did appear to be holding up a blow up naked doll with a picture of Marcus Mumford on the face, sending Laura into embarrassing laughter every time she looked up. Very amusing!

If anyone was present at the performance in 2008 you might remember someone throwing a rubber hoop at Laura which she just managed to dodge, well the guy that threw the hoop (not on purpose I must add) also met his girlfriend that day and then at Laura’s set on Saturday he proposed to her and she said yes! Really lovely story, showing both the magic of Glastonbury and Laura Marling too.

After her set the whole audience wanting more but alas, it was then time for Midlake. I like Midlake and some of their older stuff is really good. I watched a bit of their set and then went and sat on the top of the hill, the view up there is stunning.

Sunday arose and the final day of Glastonbury begun. Went to see Ellen and the Escapades in the morning again which was lovely and then Villagers. Avi Buffalo were a band I wanted to see so managed to catch them in the Park. Some of there songs were a bit limp live but I only know a few and those were really good. I might invest in their album as I think they are a good band to watch for the future. Headed down to the Pyramid for the first time since Friday to see Ray Davies. He played lots of old Kinks songs evoking sing-a-long from all the people who decided not to go and watch the football. Sunny Afternoon was particularity appropriate as the heat all weekend had been gorgeous!

After a bit of Jack Johnson, my evening concluded with The Middle East before Stevie Wonder. The Middle East are a wonderful band and ‘Blood’ which is defintely there best song, was also their best live. What was pretty special about this set was the audience also consisted of Laura Marling, Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett and King Charles. It was pretty incredible to be sharing new music with so many people that have inspired me. I know the Mumford boys have had a big part to play in the Middle East’s success over here too.

My Glastonbury Experience ended with Stevie Wonder, also my highlight of the festival. The set was full of classics and the massive audience were all singing along to the hits. At the end of the set Michael Eavis joined Stevie on stage and the whole festival sang ‘Happy Birthday to You’. It was a truly magical Glastonbury moment and one I will never forget. You could tell everybody there was totally in the moment and everybody has so much appreciation for what Michael Eavis has created. Glastonbury has changed lives and I hope it will continue to do so. A place of magic, a place of music and a place of love.

My 10 Bands to go see at Glastonbury: 2. Florence and the Machine

Last year, Florence was THE band to see. I turned up to the John Peel Tent to witness her incredible voice in action for the first time. I don’t think it was her best performance I have seen, in December at Manchester Academy her voice was flawless, but the atmosphere was incredible. This year she has moved up to the Other Stage and it will be wonderful to see what she comes up with. Possible collaborations? Choirs? Amazing outfits? Climbing up the stage? We will have to see.

Catch her on the Other Stage on Friday Night!

Florence/Ashok

Apparently, before Florence Welch became Florence and the Machine she was in a band called ‘Ashok’ and there is now a load of videos of the recordings of this band on YouTube. This is the best song I have found I think, its called A.A.B. I like the male rappers voice. It’s really husky and tuneful like he is almost singing.

Festivals 2010!

Some good festival news announced today, firstly the V Festival line-up. Which is very pop as usual, with headliners Kings of Leon and Kasabian. Florence is also on the bill, a live must-see. It also includes Ellie Goulding, Temper Trap, Imogen Heap, Passion Pit. I always think V is a bit of a rip off as you only get two days, and the line-up also includes Cheryl Cole so, maybe not.

The Green Man line-up is shaping up to be amazing. Already with Beirut as a head liner and now Joanna Newsom. Also on the line-up Fionn Regan, First Aid Kit, and the Unthanks, and I expect lots more nice folky acts to be announced in the near future.

eFestivals have also given there predictions for the Leeds/Reading headliners. Blink 182, My Chemical Romance and the Arcade Fire. Not sure about the first two, but the Arcade Fire are amazing and a band I have wanted to see live for so long, so this summer could be the time!

There will be lots of festival news and advice coming in the future as more line-ups are announced. I am so excited about it all!

My 5 Favourite Unknown Cover Songs!

There are some pretty good cover songs out their. The more obvious ones, such as Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower, Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah, Johnny Cash’s Hurt and more recently, the success of Florence and the Machine’s You’ve Got the Love. But their are also a lot of cover songs which not a lot of people will hear and this post is my favourite of those. I’ve probaly missed some of the best ones I’ve heard out, but these are the ones that come to mind.

If people hadn’t realised before, to download the mp3′s you click on the file and download from the page that come up (not right click). I’m not sure if the Johnny Flynn one works, let me know if it doesn’t. Enjoy listening :)

5. Alessi’s Ark- Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Alessi makes this song so beautiful. She doesn’t add anything extra to it, its just simple, I like that.

Alessi’s Ark- Simple Man

4. The XX- You’ve Got The Love (Florence and the Machine Cover)

I don’t know if this properly qualifies for the list as maybe its a remix not a cover? I’m not sure, its a remix/cover. A brilliant version of a song which Florence made her own, but is too a cover. I like what the XX have done with it. The harp and then the vibraphone sounds above the dubstep sound of the XX is quite special.

The XX- You’ve Got The Love (Florence and the Machine Cover/Remix)

3. Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit- Rocky Raccoon (The Beatles)

I love this, its like comedy/folk but its really good at the same time. This is a sounds like a quite hard song to cover, simply as its a bit weird but Johnny and the Sussex Wit really made it their own.

Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit- Rocky Raccoon (The Beatles)

2. Mumford and Sons- I’m Not Alone (Calvin Harris cover)

Its wonderful when bands do covers of songs nothing like there own sound, and make them sound there own. Mumford and Sons turned this pretty bad song into something pretty good. Listen to there Golden Slumbers/Carry Your Weight (The Beatles) cover too. It’s pretty stunning, its on The Hype Machine.

Mumford and Sons- I’m Not Alone (Calvin Harris Cover)

1. Regina Spektor- Real Love (John Lennon Cover)

One of the greatest songs ever written? It is to me, and this cover does the John Lennon version justice. It’s just so pretty!

Regina Spektor- Real Love (John Lennon Cover)

This was really hard! So many good covers to choose from. I think some special mentions should go to Florence and the Machines cover of Beirut’s Postcard’s From Italy, Bon Iver’s cover of Feist’s The Park and Blue Roses’ cover of Golden Slumbers.
