Summer Series Countdown Part 3: Hella Better Dancer

Hella Better Dancer finish off tomorrow’s gig and also the whole of my Summer Series. I think this band are really exciting. Their music is bluesy, grungy, dreamy and sometimes folky but ultimately it’s just really good. At the beginning of this year they released an EP called ‘Living Room EP’ which is quite a wonderful introduction to the band and quite an astonishing listen considering it was home recorded, and self produced through a laptop using no studio equipment. It’s nice to see a young band working hard, and releasing really really good stuff without the help of a label or any PR people.

Have a listen to the whole EP below and come see them!

Hella Better Dancer plays alongside Jodie Goffe and Like Spinning at the Gallery Cafe in Bethnal Green. Tickets are £4 in advance, available from WeGotTickets. Or £5 on the door. Join the Facebook page for more information.

Summer Series Countdown Part 2: Like Spinning

The second band playing my gig next Wednesday 29th August is the delightful Like Spinning aka Kari Jahnsen. I had the pleasure of watching her play a solo set last night at the Jamboree in Limehouse and it was absolutely beautiful. Her voice is rich and the guitar creates a tapestry of mellow sound as a perfect backdrop to her strong, sad songs. She even did a cover of ‘The Crying Game’ by Hannah Cohen from my favourite album of this year ‘Child Bride’. I can’t wait to see Kari again next Wednesday. Come along!

Summer Series Countdown Part 1: Jodie Goffe

This coming Wednesday (29th August) will be the last of my Summer Series this year. It’s been amazing and this final gig will be the perfect way to end it with yet another four amazing artists.

The first of these artists is Jodie Goffe. A 16 year old girl with talent beyond her years. Her debut EP ‘The Day the Moon Left’ was released earlier this year and is a record I have really fallen in love with. The songs are delicate, thoughtful and with so much wisdom and knowledge in the lyrics. I am very very excited to have Jodie playing my Summer Series, it is something which should not be missed.

Summer Series Countdown Part 4: Wildeflower

The final band that will be playing my Summer Series night this coming Wednesday is Wildeflower. I feel very lucky to have such a wonderful band on the bill and can’t wait to hear their set. Wildeflower make music which would sound more at home in Laurel Canyon. Jonathan Wilson particularly comes to mind but Fleet Foxes, Pink Floyd and George Harrison all resonate with the sound this band make. The band are actually from Surrey and will be travelling up to do an acoustic set. It’s gonna be good!

Wildeflower play alongside Greta Isaac, Low Moon Low and Alice Jemima in the garden of the Gallery Cafe in Bethnal Green, London on Wednesday 22nd August. You can get tickets here and join the Facebook page here.

Summer Series Countdown Part 3: Alice Jemima

I have written so much about Alice Jemima, I feel a bit silly introducing her to you again. But incase you are crazy and haven’t given her a listen yet, this is your chance. Alice is a bit of a UK blog crush. First heavily supported by Breaking More Waves and then leaking out into the rest of the blog world, she is now a firm favourite for me and many others. When you listen to her music it’s obvious why. She’s quirky and credible, a brilliant songwriter with a unique voice and great musicianship. Yet she also has heaps of commercial appeal. She’s got that special crossover thing which is pretty rare.

She is also rather wonderful live and so I invited her along to play my Summer Series and I am very excited to have her. I could go on and on and on, but instead, have a listen below and come and see her play!

Summer Series Countdown Part 2: Low Moon Low

Like a lot of the artists on my Summer Series line-up, Low Moon Low sent me a short and sweet email asking me to listen to one of their tracks. That was the very good ‘Slow Train’ which I put on my blog straight away. The dreamy indie-rock track is the first offering from the band and unfortunately the only thing online at the moment. I can’t wait to have them at my gig where I can check out what is still to come from them.

Low Moon Low play alongside Alice Jemima, Greta Isaac and Wildeflower this coming Wednesday (22nd August) in the garden of the Gallery Cafe in Bethnal Green. Get your tickets here and visit the facebook page here.

Summer Series Countdown Part 1: Greta Isaac

Last week my Summer Series begun! It was a wonderful night in the enchanted Gallery Cafe garden. You can go and see some of the photos on Facebook here. This coming Wednesday (22nd August) we are doing it all over again with four more amazing artists. The first of these artists I am going to introduce is Greta Isaac. Greta is a 17-year old girl from Cardiff who has already been featured on Radio 1 and has played festivals such as Swn and Green Man. Greta’s gorgeous, effortless vocals and mature songwriting make her a very exciting prospect for the future.

Greta plays alongside Wildeflower, Alice Jemima and Low Moon Low. Get your tickets for the night here.

Summer Series Countdown Part 4: Emily & the Woods

It’s tomorrow! I hope you are now very educated about what to expect from my Summer Series. But if you need a little bit more persuading to come along, this should do it! The wonderful Emily & the Woods!

Emily first appeared on my blog way back in September 2010 as New Treat #25! Back then she had a number of rough recordings on myspace recorded with Laura Marling which were starting to spark a bit of attention. Over the past two years she has blossomed as an artist playing live shows at Glastonbury festival and clocking up an incredible 1 million views on her ‘Steal his Heart’ video. Yet she still remains her lovely down to earth self, gigging constantly and continuing to perfect her live shows.

I am forever in love with her voice and am very very happy to have her playing in the garden of the Gallery Cafe tomorrow evening!

Emily plays alongside Eliza Shaddad, Henry Skewes and Brooke Sharkey.

Summer Series Countdown Part 3: Brooke Sharkey

About a year ago I moved to Cable Street in East London. I heard along the grapevine of a little place along my road called Jamboree and one Monday night went to check out what this mysterious little place was. What I found was the start of my head over heels love for East London. A community of musicians gather every Monday night and play a mixture of gypsy jazz, folk, country bluegrass and Americana music to a crowd of people who probably wish they were either living in 1920′s Berlin or 1960′s San Francisco.

Brooke Sharkey is one of these musicians who graces the stage and one of the ones who I believe could also find commercial success with her music. With a voice that swoops between Joni Mitchell and Lucy Rose and songs inspired by her travels between France and London, Brooke is one artist I never tire of seeing live.

I am delighted to have her playing at my Summer Series, bringing a true taste of East London’s underground folk movement to the garden of the Gallery Cafe.

Brooke plays alongside Eliza Shaddad, Henry Skewes and Emily and the Woods.

Summer Series Countdown Part 2: Henry Skewes

After introducing you to Eliza Shaddad yesterday, today I move onto another London-based singer songwriter who will be playing my gig on August 15th, Henry Skewes.

Many of the artists playing my Summer Series first reached my ears through sending me an email requesting me to give their music a listen. I get a hell of a lot of emails like this, and it takes something to special to stand out. Especially in the male singer-songwriter scene which is more crowded than any other scene. But Henry Skewes is one of those rare songwriters who stands out miles above the rest.

His own unique brand of North London country music instantly reminded me of Ryan Adams. His songs are melodic, beautifully sung with interesting guitar picking. ‘Middle of the Road’ is my favourite but I am very much looking forward to hearing all his songs, which I have listened to so many times online, live.

Henry plays alongside Eliza Shaddad, Brooke Sharkey and Emily and the Woods.
