Festival News: Barn on the Farm 2013

Last summer I had the pleasure of working on the artist liaison team at Barn on the Farm Festival. Located in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside, the festival takes place on a working farm, and the main stage is literally a barn. What this festival offers, which so many others don’t, is a community vibe. It’s super small and so, by the end of the weekend you feel like you know everyone on site. Plus you can walk everywhere in less than 5 minutes and, the way the stages are organised means there is no clashes, you can see every band!

I have happy memories of seeing a whole barn of people singing along to Lucy Rose, dancing away to BOY’s ‘Little Numbers’ (photo above), and the famous late night bus parties, followed by bonding with total strangers until 5am sat on sofas in an old barn. You really get the sense that this is what festivals used to be like, what they are supposed to be like.

Like always, this years line-up is already killer, and there’s more to come! I’ve highlighted some of my favourites  but you can check out the whole thing here. For only £60 for a weekend ticket you can see all this and have one of the loveliest weekends of your summer…

Matt Corby

Matt Corby is one of the most incredible musicians of our time. He is also A.W.E.S.O.M.E live. He’ll headline the Sunday of the festival, and it’s sure to be pretty special.

Orla Gartland

I saw Orla at last year’s festival and was very impressed. More than just another singer-songwriter, she’s got some real musicianship and some great songs.

Mt. Wolf

One of the most blogged about artists of last year and continually getting better, I’m yet to catch them live but based on what i’ve heard, they don’t disappoint.

Indiana

A voice to watch for 2013 (and one of my own Ones to Watch), Indiana is fast making waves with her Ellie Goulding meets The XX sound.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich

Gentle, beautiful, homegrown love songs are sure to be a perfect fit for Over Farm.

Barn on the Farm Festival takes place from the 5th-7th July 2013, tickets are on sale now from here!

Festival News: The Great Escape

The Great Escape is without a doubt one of my favourite UK festivals. Every year the line-up is incredible and, how better to spend a weekend in May than running around beautiful Brighton seeing some of the best new music the world has to offer. Last year my highlights were Grimes, Palma Violets and Alabama Shakes, and judging by the line-up just announced for this year, 2013 could even top that!

You can view the full line-up of their website, but here is a few of my highlights so far…

Merchandise

Marika Hackman

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Wolf Alice

Tom Odell

Phosphorescent

You can purchase tickets here, and they are only £45 for the weekend. See you there!

Christopher Owens- Lysandre

Ex-Girls frontman Christopher Owens has announced details of his debut solo record. It shall be called ‘Lysandre’ after a girl he met and fell in love with in Paris, back in 2008. The whole record is based on the first ever Girls tour and his love affair with Lysandre. In Christopher’s own words it is ”a coming of age story, a road trip, a love story”. Lovely hey.

The cover and everything was also shot by the wonderful Ryan McGinley (who has previously worked with Sigur Ros, Bat For Lashes and produces his own incredible work).

From the offerings already on the net from the new record, it sounds like it’s all going to be a lot more stripped back, and almost medieval sounding in places with the instrumentation including flutes and a lot of finger picking guitar. I am not a massive fan of the first recorded track ‘Lysandre’s Theme/Here we Go‘ but I do really like the three acoustic videos filmed in a Las Vegas hotel by Pitchfork.

The record will be released in January. I am very much looking forward to hearing it.

I am very excited about The Great Escape in 2 weeks time. The line-up is excellent, so much so that I have way too many clashes at the moment. And just to give me even more clashes, they announce the line-up for the Alternative Escape. Even more bands to see. Here are some of my pick of the new announcement.

Amazing Radio Showcase

Amazing Radio have picked some of there favourite new artists to come and play the Queen’s Hotel on the Friday of the festival. The line-up includes Rae Morris, Gross Magic and PINS. See the full line-up here.

Neighbourhood at Hydrant

A whole host of lovely new bands will play at The Hydrant on Saturday afternoon. Like Spinning, Emily and the Woods, Kamira Francis and Stealing Sheep. Get all the info here.

Jeah! at Life

Euphonios, Killing Moon, The Recommender and Strongroom Alive Present Jeah! at Life. The line-up features FOE, Saint Savour, Jade Hopcroft and MAUSI. See full line-up here.

In addition to all this and more, The Great Escape have also announced loads more bands for the official line-up. The addition includes the sultry sounds of Ren Harvieu who I really hope I will be able to catch.

Ty Segall and White Fence- I Am Not A Game

This sounds like it’s going to be an exciting record. So 60′s. They are releasing a collaborative album on Drag City records called Hair. Listen to one of the tracks ‘I Am Not A Game’. They say they want to bring the guitar solo back to rock and roll.

Bon Iver + The Chieftains

LISTEN HERE!

Traditional Irish folk band The Chieftains are releasing an album entitled ‘Voice of Ages’. The album, which is due out on February 21st, features collaborations with artists such as Lisa Hannigan, The Civil Wars and The Decembrists. One of the tracks is a collaboration with one of my favourite artists Bon Iver, and is a cover of traditional Irish ballad ‘Down in the Willow Garden’.

It’s such a beautiful mellow track and I urge you to take a listen. Really looking forward to hearing the rest of the album if it will be along a similar theme to this track.

Bowerbirds – Tuck the Darkness In

Bowerbirds have just announced that they are releasing their third album on March 6th 2012, which is going to be called ‘The Clearing’. It’s a long way off, but until then we have this gorgeous track to listen to entitled ‘Tuck the Darkness In’.

The album was part recorded at Bon Iver’s home recording studio, and if the last two Bowerbirds albums are anything to go for, we should all be very excited for this!

The Staves- ‘Mexico’ EP

I saw The Staves last night at Camden Enterprise. They were heavenly, as they usually are. Such a beautiful sound. They are releasing a second EP called ‘Mexico’ on December 12th via Atlantic Records. You can also buy a copy of the EP at any of the dates on their UK Communion tour, including the next two Mondays also at Camden Enterprise. You can also stream the EP below, thanks to Soundcloud.

And this is a video of the title track, Mexico, which is lovely.

The album is due early 2012 and has been produced by Glyn and Ethan Johns, and therefore should be pretty damn good.
