Festival Preview: The Great Escape

Tomorrow I shall be heading down to Brighton for the UK’s answer to SXSW, The Great Escape. It’s a wonderful weekend packed with some of the most exciting new bands in the world. Unfortunately  it’s not looking like we’re gonna have the weather of SXSW, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be great.

If you missed by day by day line-up recommendations, check out Thursday, Friday and Saturday. And below is a collective playlist of all 29 bands I think are must-sees! I’ve also listed some tips for first-timers.

Top Tips:

- Make sure you check out how far venues are from each other. You can do this using the handy map that is already online, click here. Some venues take 15 minutes to walk between so make sure you’re prepared.

- If you really, really, really want to see a band, make sure you get there early. I’d particularly say this is true of shows from CHVRCHES, Tom Odell and London Grammar. The evening corn exchange shows also usually fill up.

- Check out the city of Brighton during the day, the North Laine area (pictured at top) is particularly great, lined with wonderful little cafes and record shops.

- While your there, make sure you go to Resident Music Brighton’s finest record. Last year I managed to pick up a Girls vinyl which had sold out everywhere else.

- Bombay Aloo, a Vegetarian Indian take-away restaurant I become slightly obsessed with for my three days in Brighton each year. £1.99 for a takeaway box of all you can eat curry. And it’s amazing. Thank me later. Located on St. Ship street, just off Kings Road.

- Beyond Days at Beyond Retro- the last few years they’ve had an array of great bands play in the vintage shop. Sometimes they publish the line-up online, but that’s not happened this year yet, so pop into the shop and pick up a leaflet. Beyond Retro is located on Vine Street, near the North Laine area.

- Sign up to the exclusive Great Escape text alerts. They send you info about secret gigs taking place around the city. Over the last few years I’ve seen the Smoke Fairies on a balcony, and James Vincent McMorrow play at the end of a pier. They also usually let you know when venues are full. Details are in the festival guide.

- Don’t forget about the Alternative Escape! Check out the line-up before you go, as it’s not usually fully listed in the guide.

- Relax, the best shows happen when you least expect. Go and see a band you’ve never heard of before, they might be your new favourite. Great Escape can be one of the best weekends of the summer, it can also be one of the most stressful!

See the full line-up here and schedule here.

The Great Escape Festival takes place this weekend from the 16th-18th May. Tickets have sold out. See you on the beach!

Festival News: The Great Escape

I’m so excited for this years Great Escape festival! Not only will it mark the start of summer and the start of the festival season, but it will also showcase some of the hottest hype bands of the last year.

This week the festival announced another 100 or so bands, completing the line-up for this year (there may still be a couple more tweaks here and there). And basically, it’s going to be bloody brilliant! Here are a few selections from the new announcements which I like are pretty damn great…

Melody’s Echo Chamber

Misty Miller

Honeyblood

Andreya Triana

Clean Bandit

They join the likes of Merchandise, Blue Hawaii, Chvrches, Mac DeMarco, Wolf Alice, Tom Odell and hundreds more, the full line-up can be found over on their website. The Great Escape takes place in Brighton from 16th-18th May 2013. Festival weekend tickets are still available for £49.50 and you can also purchase day tickets or convention tickets. Ticket details can be found here.

Flying with Anna will be hosting full coverage of the festival, including a ‘What to see’ guide, so watch out for that before the festival.

See you on the beach?

Festival News: Barn on the Farm 2013

Last summer I had the pleasure of working on the artist liaison team at Barn on the Farm Festival. Located in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside, the festival takes place on a working farm, and the main stage is literally a barn. What this festival offers, which so many others don’t, is a community vibe. It’s super small and so, by the end of the weekend you feel like you know everyone on site. Plus you can walk everywhere in less than 5 minutes and, the way the stages are organised means there is no clashes, you can see every band!

I have happy memories of seeing a whole barn of people singing along to Lucy Rose, dancing away to BOY’s ‘Little Numbers’ (photo above), and the famous late night bus parties, followed by bonding with total strangers until 5am sat on sofas in an old barn. You really get the sense that this is what festivals used to be like, what they are supposed to be like.

Like always, this years line-up is already killer, and there’s more to come! I’ve highlighted some of my favourites  but you can check out the whole thing here. For only £60 for a weekend ticket you can see all this and have one of the loveliest weekends of your summer…

Matt Corby

Matt Corby is one of the most incredible musicians of our time. He is also A.W.E.S.O.M.E live. He’ll headline the Sunday of the festival, and it’s sure to be pretty special.

Orla Gartland

I saw Orla at last year’s festival and was very impressed. More than just another singer-songwriter, she’s got some real musicianship and some great songs.

Mt. Wolf

One of the most blogged about artists of last year and continually getting better, I’m yet to catch them live but based on what i’ve heard, they don’t disappoint.

Indiana

A voice to watch for 2013 (and one of my own Ones to Watch), Indiana is fast making waves with her Ellie Goulding meets The XX sound.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich

Gentle, beautiful, homegrown love songs are sure to be a perfect fit for Over Farm.

Barn on the Farm Festival takes place from the 5th-7th July 2013, tickets are on sale now from here!

Glastonbury ETC 2013: The Longlist (a very vague listen)

On Tuesday the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition Longlist was announced. It consists of 120 artists, filtered down from 8000 entrees, by 40 UK music bloggers, including myself.

Unfortunately I don’t have the time to go through and listen to every artist in detail, but Glastonbury have put a Soundcloud playlist of around 70 of those artists, which makes it easy to go through and listen to around 5-10 seconds of each song. There was also quite a few names I recognized.

So this is a very vague and inconclusive list of some of the best of the longlist. It is likely that the actual list, which will be chosen by Michael and Emily Eavis among other Glastonbury stage programmers, will feature less electronic artists and they only choose 8, I picked 10. We should find out the short list sometime later this week.

You can view the whole longlist here.

My three artists were Bridie Jackson, Farao and The Bronze Medal.

Here once again is the gorgeous Bridie Jackson…

Festival News: The Great Escape

The Great Escape is without a doubt one of my favourite UK festivals. Every year the line-up is incredible and, how better to spend a weekend in May than running around beautiful Brighton seeing some of the best new music the world has to offer. Last year my highlights were Grimes, Palma Violets and Alabama Shakes, and judging by the line-up just announced for this year, 2013 could even top that!

You can view the full line-up of their website, but here is a few of my highlights so far…

Merchandise

Marika Hackman

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Wolf Alice

Tom Odell

Phosphorescent

You can purchase tickets here, and they are only £45 for the weekend. See you there!

Festival Preview: Bestival 2012

It’s 2012. And there is no Glastonbury. This realisation for me and many others came down pretty heavy. But here was my list of alternative options;

1. Cry a lot, watch old Glastonbury footage on YouTube while wearing wellies in your living room.

2. Take it a step further and pitch your tent at worthy farm alongside the cows, get your mate to play ‘Wonderwall’ to you while you sit in a puddle of mud and warm cider.

3. Go to Bestival.

Although I did maybe take option 1 a bit far, and definitely considered No.2, I eventually opted for No.3. Bestival is like Glastonbury, but smaller, and a bit newer. But the atmosphere comes as close as any other UK festival can get. it’s eclectic, for all ages, and theres all that weird and wonderful shit which makes Glastonbury so good.

The line-up is also pretty great. For me Bestival is a bit of a party festival, and I tend to ignore my usual folky instincts and instead opt for the weird, wonderful and  dance bands. Last year my highlights were Primal Scream by a mile but just standing at the main stage during the day brings so many amazing surprises that you can have the time of your life watching a bunch of bands you wouldn’t usually opt to see. Anyway, here is my pick of the weekend.

GRIMES

She’s a bit amazing. One of my favourite records of the year and definitely my favourite gig (Great Escape). Mind blowingly great.

AlunaGeorge

The name on everyones lips. AlunaGeorge are going to be M.A.S.S.I.V.E. Catch them while you can.

Chairlift

Everyone loves a French electro-pop party hey? Especially well suited to Bestival.

Sigur Ros

A band I have been longing to see for years. The echoey, gorgeous sounds of Sigur Ros.

Little Dragon

Little Dragon are such a summer band for me. Will be perfect if the sun comes out at Bestival

Palma Violets

One band which are definitely ones to watch. Palma Violets blew me away at Great Escape where I saw them by chance.

SBTRKT

I predict a fair few collaborations at Bestival during SBTRKT’s set with both Little Dragon and Jessie Ware playing at the Festival.

Spiritulized

Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space.

Fourtet B2B Caribou

Like I said earlier, Bestival is all about the party. And this should be some party.

See you there it’s gonna be fab!

Festival Preview: Bushstock

Festival #3 of the year and one in quite a similar style to #1 and #2. Like Camden Crawl and Great Escape, Bushstock is one of those multi-venue inner city festivals where you run around trying to see as many bands as possible. Unlike CC and TGE, Bushstock is much carmer, less stressful and a lot folkier. It’s not overcrowded, you probably won’t have to queue and with only 4 venues, there is little chance of you getting lost. However, the difficulty arrives when deciding who to see, as the bill is ram-packed with amazing artists. I’m gonna give you a bit of help, so here is a Flying with Anna guide to 2012′s Bushstock festival.

1:30-2 David McCaffrey- St. Stephens Church

Start your day at the best venue of the festival with the delightful David McCaffrey. A previous New Treat on the blog, I am so impressed with David’s nack for melodies paired with his lush voice.

2:30-3 Mahalia- St. Stephens Church

Next up I’d stay put in St. Stephens church for little known singer-songwriter Mahalia. I don’t know much about this girl, except she’s 14 and could be quite a treat. Her voice has soulful qualities and her songwriting is way beyond her years.

3-3:30 Rae Morris- Defectors Weld

One of your absolute must sees of the festival should definitely be Miss Rae Morris. This girl is such a talent and pretty much blows every member of her audience away when she plays live. Plus she is destined for big big things, so catch her while you can.

4:30-5:10 Raghu Dixit- St. Stephens Church

Mix your day up a bit, get out of the folky zone and see some cracking Indo world music with Bangalore’s own Raghu Dixit. Guaranteed to put a smile on anyones face.

5-5:30 Joe Banfi- Defectors Weld

Someone I’d definitely keep an eye and an ear out for is Sheffield based Joe Banfi. This young chap makes music with the ghostly qualities of Daughter and the power and pop sensibilities of Ben Howard. A very beautiful live show.

5:30-6 Sarah Jarosz- St. Stephens Church

This is yet another must see of the festival. Over again from Boston, I’ve heard nothing but good things about her Bush Hall show last summer. Sarah Jarosz and her band make the most gorgeous country music with remarkable musicianship. This is gonna be a special set.

6-6:30 Alessi’s Ark- Defectors Weld

It’s been forever since I’ve seen Alessi. She never fails to give a loveable, quirky live set with her beautiful tales of Ribbon Lakes and Hummingbirds.

7:45- 8:15 Lanterns on the Lake- St. Stephens Church

And yet ANOTHER must see of Bushstock (yes there are too many). Lanterns on the Lake in St. Stephens church is a match made in heaven. Their luscious rich haunting sounds will send shivers down your spine and leave a tear in your eye.

8:45-9:15 Pale Seas- Shepherds Bar

I managed to miss Pale Seas at Great Escape (very sad) but shall be catching their set this weekend. If you don’t already know Pale Seas then you are missing out on a lot and I insist you catch up pronto.

10-11 Daughter- St. Stephens Church

Last year Daughter played St. Stephens Church at Bushstock but they were on much earlier in the day, second on the bill I think. This weekend they are headlining the stage which shows you just how far they have come in 1 year. Having just signed to 4AD, who knows where they will be this time next year, but I predict dizzy heights. Catch them this weekend for a guaranteed beautiful show and see a band fast on the rise.

Then be prepared to dance the night away! The line-up also includes Mystery Jets, Marcus Foster and Fink. To see the full line-up and buy tickets visit www.bushstock.co.uk
